Heading to tropical climes where there’s a chance you’ll be met with pesky mosquitoes? Many of our favourite exotic destinations pose a risk of insect bites, but with the right methods of deterring them, you can avoid getting bitten and enjoy your holiday seamlessly! When you’re questioning how to stop mosquito bites, there are various different options to look at. Read on for some of the most effective ways to keep the critters at bay…
1. Get citronella wristbands
It’s well-known that the scent of citronella helps to keep away a multitude of pests. You can buy packets of citronella bands to wear on your wrists and ankles on holiday to repel mosquitoes, and we’re never without them in exotic destinations. We recommend you buy these before your holiday – many resorts sell them but at a much higher price than the packs you can get in the UK.
2. Take candles and essential oils
Want to spend time on your balcony but worried about getting bitten? Pack a citronella candle in your case to help keep bugs away. You can also bring essential oils to either burn or spray – some of the best scents for keeping away the bugs include lavender, peppermint, rosemary, lemon eucalyptus, cinnamon and thyme. When you’re avoiding mosquito bites on holiday, the more scents like these, the better!
3. Use a plug-in insect repellent
Whilst you’ll mostly come across mosquitoes when you’re outside, sometimes they can sneakily make it into your room. A plug-in repellent is a great way to double your protection against critters and stop them finding you overnight – especially if you sleep outside of the covers. There are a range of different scents and sizes you can buy from different brands, some of the most popular being by GoTravel and Jungle Formula.
4. Wear loose-fitting, light coloured clothing
Mosquitoes can be relentless – they’re actually able to bite through tight-fitting clothes, and they’re also attracted to darker coloured clothing like black and navy blue. For this reason, we’d aim to pack lighter, looser garments for your holiday evenings and try to include lighter shades. This will help keep you cooler too – a win-win!
5. Spray yourself with repellent
There are various insect repellents you can buy to spray on your skin whilst you’re away on your travels. In some destinations, you’ll only really need to use them at night on exposed skin but we always pack a couple of extra bottles just in case we need them! Better to have too much than too little. Some of the most popular mosquito repellent sprays include Jungle Formula and Avon Skin So Soft. Take a look at this article for a deeper dive into different bug repellent sprays suitable for all kinds of travellers.
