7 Quirky Museums You Have to Visit!

In honour of #InternationalMuseumDay which lands on the 18th May each year, we thought we’d take a look at some of the most unique museums from around the world.

Forget your usual exhibitions – these places are anything but ordinary! From underwater museums to a museum that will have you in the recording studio, these terrific venues will transform your next travel plans and take your trip to the next level. Here’s the places you need to visit…

Museum of Broken Relationships – Zagreb, Croatia

Yes, you read that right – there’s a museum in Croatia dedicated to housing mementos from love lost across time. All donations to these collections are anonymous, and as you wander through you’ll come across objects like wedding dresses, rings, love letters and photographs, with each item being accompanied by a brief memo of the relationship and its breakup.

Slightly odd and unusual – or incredibly interesting? That’s for you to find out! One thing’s for sure, reading the compelling stories and seeing what were, once, treasured items between two people is both compelling and heart-wrenching at the same time. Some stories will make you sad whilst others will inspire happiness and hope. Definitely something different to your usual old artifacts!

Underwater Museum – Cancun, Mexico

You might have to hold your breath for this one! The Cancun Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA) is the largest underwater museum on earth, housing over 500 life-sized sculptures at the bottom of the ocean floor. Talk about a different way to take in art!

Each sculpture is made from a pH-neutral marine concrete and has been anchored to the ocean floor, meaning over time they have transformed to become a part of the natural aquatic environment. Basically, many fishies will now call this museum ‘home!’

To visit this museum you’ll head out off the coast of Cancun by boat, where you can choose to scuba dive or snorkel your way to the sculptures. Diving down, you won’t just be observing amazing art but in fact casting your eyes upon an all-new coral reef. Talk about an underwater adventure!

Science Museum – Valencia, Spain

Valencia Background

You’ll be wowed by this museum from miles away – its iconic structure stands out against the sunny skyline with its bold and bright architecture and accompanying water features. Set in the heart of the city, one minute you can be strolling around sunny Spanish streets and the next, feasting your eyes on a museum that looks like it’s just rolled straight out of a sci-fi movie.

Prepare to see science animations and enjoy interactive exhibits like never before, learn about the evolution of life as we know it as well as the advancements in science and technology that make our world what it is today. You can’t fail to be wowed!

Many traditional museums forbid the touching of exhibits, but the Valencia Science Museum adopts the opposite approach – they forbid you to not get involved! So much so that their slogan is ‘It is prohibited not to touch, not to feel, not to think.’ That’s the kind of learning we like!

Guggenheim Museum – Bilbao, Spain

If you want to be impressed by a museum before even stepping foot in it, then say hello to the unique structure of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Housing an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art on the inside, the suave titanium curves of its exterior ensure you’ve seen a work of art before you’ve even stepped through the doors.

Whether you’re a fan of art or not, you can’t fail to leave this museum without being impressed by the creativity showcased throughout. From Jeff Koons’ bold and bright balloon sculpture to an outdoor exhibition of a giant West Highland terrier composed of flowers and plants, there’s certainly nothing mundane about the art on display here!

The Museum of the Future – Dubai, UAE

Dubai Background

Prepare to step into the future with this one! As with all things in Dubai, this museum serves up a first-class, futuristic experience like nowhere else can. You’re encouraged to head on a journey to see, touch, and shape our shared future – exploring everything from future design trends to the most cutting-edge technologies from the world’s leading innovators. All your senses will kick into full gear at this museum – expect to see new and amazing sights, sounds, and even smells!

This museum is especially great for kids, with an entire section known as the ‘Children’s World’ where children can enter a fantasy world that encourages exploration and play. They can imagine, design, and even build things in this unique space – it’s a truly inspiring place to be.

Museum of Miniatures – Prague, Czech Republic

Yep, you read that right. The Museum of Miniatures! Who wouldn’t want to see really small, fascinating items during their city break to Prague?

Want to see the smallest bicycle in the world made of pure gold? You’ll find it here. There’s 29 exhibits in total, featuring works from a variety of amazing artists – known as microminiaturists.

At first you may find these pieces somewhat comical, but you’ll soon discover a newfound appreciation for the level of detail and intricate craftsmanship that goes into each and every (tiny) work of art.

You’ll even need to use a microscope or magnifying glass to see some of them, which really does beg the question – just how did they manage to create something so complex, so small?!

ABBA Museum – Stockholm, Sweden

Calling all dancing queens! That’s right, there’s an actual Museum dedicated to all things ABBA in their home city of Stockholm in Sweden. Your visit to this one-of-a-kind experience will have you feeling like a Super Trouper from start to finish – it’s an interactive, immersive ABBA adventure that will have you walking in and dancing out!

Not only will you get to see items from the actual set of Mamma Mia! The Movie, you’ll be treated to the history of how the band came together, see some of their most iconic outfits, and head into recording studio booths to listen to some of your favourite songs being produced!

You can even hop on stage yourself to perform either Mamma Mia or Dancing Queen as the fifth member of ABBA – now that’s a memory worth making!

We’re sure you’ll come out of this museum saying Gimme Gimme Gimme more…
