Basketball Champs Join Spain Holidays Promo Campaign

Although cheap holidays in Spain are never likely to drop off the agenda for Britons seeking a week or two of sunshine and relaxing beach time, the Spanish tourism industry refuses to rest on its laurels. With tourism consistently one of the country’s main economic drivers, the government and business is relying on it more than ever to help pull Spain out of the economic doldrums.

That is why the latest campaign from the Spanish Institute of Tourism – entitled I Need Spain – is pulling out all the stops this year, and has recently recruited the national basketball team as part of a squad of Spanish celebrities tasked with promoting Spain holidays. The collaboration between the tourism body and the Spanish Federation of Basketball is scheduled to continue until the country hosts the FIBA World Championships in 2014.

So far, top chef Ferran Adria and the football start of Real Madrid have been taking part in the campaign, promoting various destinations, talking up the country’s delicious national and regional cuisine – and highlighting its sporting prowess.

The six basketball champs that have been signed up to I Need Spain are Rudy Fernandez of the Dallas Mavericks, Pau Gasol, who plays with the Los Angeles Lakers, the Toronto Raptors’ Jose Calderon and the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Ricky Rubio.

In a promotional video for the campaign, aimed at both English and Spanish speakers, the players have revealed their thoughts and views on their favourite places in Spain and their favourite aspects of Spanish life. The video can be seen on YouTube, and offers some fresh perspectives for anyone planning cheap holidays in Spain in the future.

Although Spain is such a hugely diverse country that adventurous visitors will never tire of discovering new places and experiences, this latest campaign will certainly give interested parties a fresh perspective. With cheap flights constantly available to all Spanish regions, it is yet another reason to give this popular holiday destination a try.
