How To Get To Albania

If you’re booking a holiday with us, but want to know the best way to get to Albania, then here’s what we recommend. Our closest package holiday destination to Albania is Corfu, and luckily, the town of Ksamil, which is the place going viral on socials, is just a stone’s throw away from the Greek island. Ionian Seaways links Corfu with Albania, with regular daily services throughout the year. The service connects Corfu with the popular destination of Sarandë on the south west coast of the country. The frequency of crossings depends on if you are travelling in low, mid or high season. At its peak, there are six departures, each way, three in mid-season and one in the low season, winter months.

Where To Visit In Albania

Sarandë

Sarandë is a resort on the Albanian Riviera, in southern Albania. Sandwiched between the Ionian Sea and hills of olive groves, the town is on a horseshoe-shaped bay, edged by beaches and a promenade. This coastal gem is a popular destination for tourists seeking a unique and affordable Mediterranean getaway.

With its crystal-clear waters and sandy beaches, Sarandë is a paradise for sun-seekers and beach lovers. Explore the bustling promenade, lined with charming cafes, restaurants, and shops, or simply relax on the beach and soak up the sun. For those seeking adventure, the nearby Butrint National Park offers a fascinating glimpse into Albania’s rich history, with well-preserved ancient ruins and lush Mediterranean vegetation.

Ksamil

Just a short distance from Sarandë lies Ksamil, a picturesque coastal village renowned for its stunning beaches and idyllic islands. This hidden gem offers a tranquil escape from the crowds, with sparkling turquoise waters and pristine white sand. To get here from Sarandë, you can travel by bus, taxi or even a rental car. The bus from Sarandë to Ksamil costs around 150 LEK (1.30 EUR), and buses depart between 6:30 AM and 18:30 PM near the Port of Saranda. A taxi will set you back around 13 euros, and a rental car in Saranda costs at least 20-25 euros per day.

In Ksamil, we recommend you explore the three small islands just off the coast, accessible by boat or swimming. Enjoy a leisurely swim in the turquoise waters, snorkel among the vibrant marine life, or simply relax on the sandy shores. Ksamil is also a great base for exploring the surrounding area, with opportunities for hiking, boat tours, and visiting nearby archaeological sites.

  1. Pack Wisely: Albania has a diverse climate, so pack versatile clothing that can be layered. Don’t forget comfortable shoes for exploring, a hat, and sunscreen.

  1. Respect Local Customs: Albania is a conservative society, so it’s important to respect local customs and dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or rural areas.

What Is The Currency In Albania?

Albania’s national currency is the LEK, but euros are widely accepted in tourist places. Any taxis you take will most likely quote their price in euros too. However, if you don’t have euros, then the best alternatives are US dollars or pounds. This is because euros, pounds or US dollars are popular currencies so they’re easy to buy and sell in Albania.

In Albania, paying in cash is more popular than paying by card. So, although we’re used to tapping Apple/Google Pay or paying contactless back at home, this isn’t as common in Albania. There are many local places in Albania, where you can only pay in cash. Places like small supermarkets, souvenir stores and bakeries are likely to be cash only too. Even the locals mostly pay in cash so we definitely recommend changing some currency during your visit.
