A Family Guide to Zante

If you’re trying to find the most adventurous and fun-filled holiday for you and your family, look no further than the Greek island of Zante.

Holidays to Zante have much more going for them than just white sand beaches and ancient ruins. Zante’s resorts are geared towards kids, and offer a range of activities so families have everything they need to make fantastic memories together.

Zante’s main three child-friendly resorts are Tsilivi, Kalamaki and Alykanas and all make for excellent bases from which to enjoy your trip. These resorts have everything you and your little ones could desire including waterparks, game centres and fair grounds. Put a little pizazz into your next Greek holiday and see what exciting adventures the island of Zante has in store for you and your family.

Get around the island on horseback

One of the best ways to explore Zante’s incredible natural beauty is to take a trek across its countryside. Driving in a car or gearing everyone up for a hike are both options, but we think the kids would agree that going by horseback would be way more fun.

Horseback riding is a popular activity in Zante and Nana’s Horse Riding Centre in Kalamaki gives adults and kids the opportunity to trot across the five kilometre beach to Laganas on horseback. If you’re worried about your riding skills, or have little ones that might be too nervous to sit on a saddle, you can also hire a horse-drawn carriage to take you around the laid-back resort of Alykanas, in the north east of the island.

Take a ride to Turtle Island

For any animal lovers in your family, the small island of Marathonissi is the place to visit. Famously nicknamed ‘Turtle Island’, you’ll be able to spot the endangered loggerhead turtles or Caretta-Caretta as they are called in Greece. This island is one of the few places worldwide where you’ll still get a chance to see these endangered species.

Hop aboard a glass-bottomed boat and venture into these magnificent creature’s natural habitat – just make sure to have your camera at the ready.

Explore the vessel on Shipwreck Beach

Zante is known for having gorgeous white beaches and even whiter towering cliffs. Many of these beaches are family-friendly, with watersport facilities and playgrounds for the little ones. But for something a little different than your average stretch of sand, head to Shipwreck Beach. This is one of the most photographed beaches in the world and is only accessible by boat.

This sandy coast gets its name from the wreck of an old merchant vessel called Panagiotis. The boat was shipwrecked more than 30 years ago after the Greek navy pursued them for smuggling. Today this massive vessel is a favourite with children and they can have fun thinking up pirate names while climbing aboard the ship to have a look.

Which resort to choose

Kalamaki

Several of the resorts here are specifically geared towards families on cheap Zante holidays, and Kalamaki is no exception. This resort is full of fabulous day trip activities to take the kids on, including a small waterpark, a go-karting track and a mini golf course. Kalamaki is also home to the Caretta Fun Park, which has plenty of arcade games and rides to keep children entertained for hours.

Tsilivi

To the north of the island is the resort of Tsilivi. This town has a pretty spectacular waterpark which boasts a range of slides as well as a Lazy River. Tsilivi Waterpark also sells delicious barbecued food if you and your troops start to get a little peckish.

The Luna Fun Park is also located here, which is overflowing with kiddie activities such as bouncy castles, fairground rides, paint-balling and a Rodeo Bull. Why not take turns to see who can stay on for the longest? For a relaxing afternoon you can head to the 50s themed ten-pin bowling centre, Bowl’m Over, and battle it out for first prize.

Alykanas

Last but certainly not least, the Alykanas resort pulls out all the stops with children’s trampolines, a crazy golf course and the ‘Trainiki’ mini train. This train goes through several traditional villages making stops along the way to pick up souvenirs and to sample some of local food. If you have any children under the age of four, they can travel aboard for free!

Alykanas is also home to an archaeological site where the ancient city of Arcadia is currently being excavated. If your kids are interested in fossils and digging, this might just be right up their ally.

So there you have it – Zante’s best spots to take the family! Where to first?
