What is data roaming?
Smart and modern phones rely heavily on access to the internet running almost all the time due to the applications that run on your devices. This is ok when you are using your inclusive data bundle and your own networks services however if you go abroad your phone still thinks it should go online for its information which can lead to heavy charges if you don’t action your settings.
Why switch it off?
That’s totally your choice but when roaming outside the EU prices are really high per megabyte of data downloaded. Recently a young girl was hit with a £3000 phone bill whilst she was on holiday in Turkey.
1mb of data can cost as much as £6. Typically 1mb is visiting a website, a four minute song is about 6mb. This can be quite costly if you’re wanting to download a music album.
Many of us wouldn’t dream of using mobile internet abroad particularly when travelling outside the EU. Here are some slideshows to show you how to turn off your mobile data when abroad to avoid those nasty charges.
