We have just returned from the Hotel Porto Mare in Madeira, and I felt I really must put in a good word for this place. My husband and I are both in our fifties and were looking for a quiet break from the cold British winter and decided to try Madeira. We usually holiday in the Canary Islands but a particularly cold and wet experience last year pushed us to try something a little different. We booked a week at the Petro Mare online (very brave for us!!) on the Holiday Hypermarket website and found a good deal with First Choice.
The gardens around the hotel are beautiful with fantastic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Our room was very spacious with wonderful views of the gardens.
We stayed B&B and the breakfast choice was great with English or continental breakfasts available. Although we had the choice to upgrade to half board we were glad we didn’t. We felt spoilt for choice by places to try nearby. We did eat in the hotel’s facilities a couple of times when we didn’t feel like dressing up to head out, and found the food excellent and sensibly priced. We tried the Italian just outside the hotel which was quite nice too.
Funchal is only about a 20 minute walk away but we made use of the courtesy shuttle bus laid on by the hotel and we’re pleased we did as it is such a beautiful place with a fascinating history.
All in all we were very glad we decided to change to Madeira and would recommend the Hotel Porto Mare as a lovely place to stay.
