Barcelona
We couldn’t round up summer city breaks without kicking off with beautiful Barcelona! It’s one of our favourite parts of Spain, with plenty to do, breathtaking views and colourful architectural wonders around every corner. You’ll enjoy every moment of your trip, from visiting world-famous landmarks like Gaudi’s La Sagrada Familia to strolling the iconic Las Ramblas markets.
When you visit in summer, Barcelona gives you the perfect fusion of an energetic city break and a relaxing beach holiday. There are endless sights to see, museums to visit and shops to browse when you fancy an action-packed day. On the other hand, you could slow things down and spend your time sipping cocktails overlooking golden beaches or sampling exquisite seafood at the marina. A win-win situation!
Nice
Nice is one of the most elegant and luxurious cities you’ll visit, and it’s especially stunning in summer. This beauty spot perched on the French Riviera between Cannes and Monaco will make you feel a million dollars. Dine like royalty in Michelin star restaurants, take moonlit walks on a soft, sandy beach and let champagne flow in swanky rooftop bars – there’s no better way to live the high life!
When it comes to activities in Nice, you’re spoilt for choice. Exploring the beautiful Old Town is an activity in itself, with endless baroque buildings and quirky eateries to discover. If you want to take the adrenaline up a level, you could throw on your swimwear and enjoy some water sports on the Med. Alternatively, you could take in sweeping views of the coastline from a hiking trail. There’s so much to sink your teeth into!
Rome
Take off for pizza, romance, fashion, history and endless fun in the sun! Rome has all this in abundance, and so much more. It’s long been one of our favourite destinations for a summer city break. You can make memories visiting world-famous landmarks such as the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum or spend hours working your way through high-end stores and independent boutiques by the Spanish Steps.
One thing everyone visits Italy for is, of course, the incredible food. It’s the home of global favourites like pizza and pasta, not to mention mouth-watering gelato in hundreds of flavours! Foodies will be in heaven on a city break to Rome. What could be better than soaking up some sun in a pretty beer garden, chomping into an authentic slice of pizza? Absolutely nothing!
Lisbon
If you love scenic views, captivating castles and days bursting with activity, Lisbon’s the place for you. You can explore waterfront bars and medieval buildings by day, and you can party until the sun comes up by night. There are many sides to this colourful city, from historical sites down quaint, cobbled streets to golden beaches lined with lively eateries. It’s the ideal destination for all kinds of travellers!
Whilst there’s so much going on in Lisbon, don’t be fooled – there’s also plenty of opportunity to relax and unwind here. You’re never far from a friendly local bar where you can leisurely make your way through a jug of sangria with a backdrop of green, rolling hills and twinkling ocean waves. The sun shines brightly through the summer in Lisbon, so a few hours on the beach is never a bad idea either!
Prague
Prague is a city break favourite of ours all year round, but there’s something extra special about this city in the summer. The twinkling Vltava river, the grand gothic architecture, the luscious green parks – it’s picture perfect. You could go for a fleeting weekend visit and cram in activities from escape rooms to museums, or you could spend days on end wandering the Czech capital’s fascinating streets.
One of the things Prague is best-known for is its food and drink – specifically, beer. It’s known to many as the beer capital of the world, and it’s not hard to see why. There are beer museums and even a beer spa! If you’re looking to have a pint or two on your summer city break, there’s nothing quite like dining al fresco in Prague with a crisp beer in the sun.
Valencia
The Spanish port city of Valencia has so much to offer. It lies on the south-eastern coast and is the third largest city in Spain, although it tends to swap the hustle and bustle of larger cities for relaxed vibes in picturesque scenery. With warm summer weather, gorgeous beaches and a thriving food and drink scene, Valencia should be at the top of your city break bucket list!
Your happy holiday to Valencia will be filled with activity, and you can take it at whatever pace you like. Whether you want to discover mystical pink waters at the Laguna Salada de Torrevieja or dive into life under the sea at Europe’s largest aquarium, you won’t be bored for a second. You could even step back in time at the medieval quarter, Barrio Del Carmen. Whatever you do, prepare to fall in love with Valencia!
New York
What could be better than exploring the humongous skyscrapers and bright lights of the Big Apple in summer? The world-famous concrete jungle is top of the bucket list for many, and with so many iconic sights to see, there’s no wonder. Want to gaze at a sunny skyline from the top of the Rockefeller Centre? Cross Brooklyn Bridge over sparkling waters? Picnic in Central Park? You can do all this and more on a summer break to NYC!
A trip to New York is the gift that keeps on giving. It may be known to be magical at Christmas time, but if you ask us, it’s just as breathtaking in summer. The already vibrant colours of green parks, glowing billboards and tasty delights seem that bit more alive when the sun is out. Whether you have a whistle-stop tour over a few days or you opt for a long week in the city, you’re in for the time of your life.
Budapest
Budapest is a thriving city filled with so much to do and see. One day you could be taking on weird and wonderful activities like visiting ruin bars and quirky museums, and the next you could be feeding the soul with hearty food and taking a bicycle ride around an island on a river. You’ll find magical sights around every corner and it’s all the more beautiful in summer, so don’t forget your camera!
There are certain activities you simply must tick off on your Budapest city break. For example, it’s known to be the spa capital of the world, and the thermal spas are on another level. The city is also famous for being very reasonably priced and having a spectacular bar scene – we recommend a stop off at the iconic Szimpla Kert. Whatever you choose to fill your days in Budapest with, you’ll never get enough of this sensational city!
Krakow
Poland’s oldest city is a sight to behold, particularly when the sun is shining. It’s steeped in history and scattered with fascinating landmarks. The buildings are big and beautiful, with must-visit structures like the Wawel Castle – the world’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. There’s no surprise that Krakow is fast becoming one of the most popular options for an exciting city break.
As well as delicious food, quirky bars and colourful nightlife, there’s a chance to visit one of the most significant places in world history just outside of Krakow: Auschwitz. Whilst it is one of the most heart-wrenching experiences you’ll have, it’s worth visiting to learn and to honour the millions who suffered. There are various tours to take from the city centre, some of which stop off at other tourist spots such as the Wieliczka Salt Mine.
