With the Great British Bake Off just around the corner, we couldn’t help but think about all the delicious desserts we love from around the world! Are you one of those people who can’t travel to a different country without sampling all the sweet treats on offer? This one’s for you…
Tiramisu, Italy
Kicking off with a good one, one of our favourite desserts is a delicious tiramisu. This tasty dish comes from the beautiful country of Italy, and is a coffee flavoured dessert made from ladyfingers (savoiardi) dipped in coffee, layered with a whipped mixture of eggs, sugar, and mascarpone cheese, and dusted with cocoa.
Tiramisu, also known as Tuscan Trifle, was invented in the late 60s early 70s in Treviso. This beautiful town is found in north east Italy, around 30 minutes from Venice. If you’d like to sample this tasty treat for yourself, then take a look at our amazing deals to Venice.
Baklava, Turkey
Do you love sweet flaky pastry? So do we! And Baklava definitely ticks those boxes. You can find this small bite of tastiness in many countries but especially Turkey. Traditional Turkish baklava, also known as fistikli baklava or pistachio baklava is typically made of filo dough, finely crushed pistachios, butter, and a simple syrup made of sugar, water, and lemon juice.
It is widely accepted that baklava originated in the Ottoman Empire, and dates back hundreds of years to the 17th Century! Though you can probably grab a piece of baklava in the UK, nothing tastes as good as the original, right? Check out our bargain deals to Turkey and make sure to sample the goods while you’re there.
Tres Leches Cake, Mexico
Food in Mexico is second to none – enchiladas, tacos, nachos…delicious! But, when it comes to desserts, the front runner just has to be tres leches cake. It’s a light and airy dessert, so it doesn’t feel as calorific (but dessert goes to the heart anyway, right?!). The sponge cake is soaked in three types of milk then topped with whipped cream and dusted in cinnamon.
The dessert originated in México in the 19th century, and it’s believed to have been created from English influences like trifle and rum cake! Want a piece of the action? These Mexico deals might be just the treat you need.
Black Forest Gateau, Germany
Chocolate and cherry is one of those unexpectedly delicious combinations, which is why we love a black forest gateau so much. This chocolatey delight originates from Germany, and is a layered chocolate and cream cake with a rich cherry filling. Decorations vary depending on where you get it from but you can usually count on a tasty topping of cherries too.
As you can probably guess by the name, black forest gateau originates from Germany’s black forest in the southwestern region. There are a couple of cities that aren’t too far away, so if you want to visit the mountainous region of the Black Forest, we recommend staying in Stuttgart.
Churros, Spain
All the best foods are fried… french fries, fried chicken, fish and chips. But what’s better than fried treats? Fried treats, rolled in sugar, then dipped in chocolate. Okay, that’s it, we’re drooling! These fried bits of goodness originated in Spain, and are made with choux pastry dough, then piped into hot oil using a piping bag with star shaped tip. They’re then rolled in cinnamon sugar and dipped into warmed chocolate or caramel sauce.
In Spain, churros can either be thin (and sometimes knotted) or long and thick, where they are known as porras or jeringos in some regions. They are normally eaten for breakfast too – where can we sign up? Do you want to be eating churros for breakfast? Check out our sweet Spanish deals!
Cyprus Delight, Cyprus
When you think of sweet treats, it doesn’t always have to be Paul Hollywood standard cakes! There’s a wide variety of little nibbles from around the world that just can’t be missed. Cyprus is famous for its delicious sweets known as ‘delights’, which have been produced on the island for centuries. Cyprus delight is made without the use of preservatives, simply with sugar, cornstarch and flavouring or nuts, then dusted with icing sugar to prevent them from sticking together.
Villages in the Paphos region still traditionally produce these soft, chewy sweets. The most traditional flavour is rose, followed by lemon, mastic and bergamot. If you want to bag yourself a few boxes, or bring back some souvenirs for family and friends, make sure to keep your eye out for Cyprus delights on your holiday to Paphos.
Trdelnik, Prague
There’s nothing better when you’re on a city break than exploring your surroundings with a local delicacy in your hand. When in Prague, you’ve just got to get your hands on one of these tasty treats! Trdelnik is made from dough that is wrapped around a stick, then baked and rolled in sugar. It’s often filled with ice cream too!
Trdelnik is the Czech Republic’s take on the famous chimney cake from Hungary, but many European countries have their own take on the dish, including Romania. As it’s reaching Christmas markets season, why not book yourself a city break to Prague so you can sample Trdelnik for yourself and enjoy the Christmas festivities too!
Key Lime Pie, USA
Food in America is bigger and arguably better than back at home, and when it comes to desserts, the States really know what they’re doing. One of our ultimate favourite desserts – a mix of sweet and tart – has to be the Key lime pie. It’s made from a pastry crust, a yellow custard (egg yolks, sweetened condensed milk, and key lime juice), and a topping of either whipped cream or meringue.
The dish is named after the small Key limes, which are more aromatic than the common Persian limes. The limes have yellow juice, giving the filling a yellow colour to it! This delicious dessert reportedly originated in Key West, Florida, in the late 19th century. Hop on a plane and head to sunny Florida for the holiday of a lifetime, and don’t forget to grab some Key lime pie while you’re there!
