Praia d’Oura translated literally means “Golden Beach” and that’s exactly what you’ll find here. Don’t let the 1.5 hour transfer from the airport put you off as it’s definitely worth the trip.
The beach is very picturesque beneath the sandstone cliffs. There are plenty of water sports to choose from too. We opted out though because we didn’t fancy being thrown about on a banana boat and preferred to just watch everyone else have a go. Did try scuba diving for the first time, and we were so glad we did. The expert tuition gave us the confidence to explore the underwater world, and what a world it is; tiny colourful fish, unusual plants and pretty coral were incredible to see, definitely recommended. It was a really good experience. You can walk along the seaside promenade and browse the shops. Bars and restaurants are also here.
One afternoon we abandoned the beach and visited Albufeira, a city just along the coast. You can actually walk there along the cliff tops but we found it far to hot to do any form of exercise! The old town is very quaint while “The Strip” is a bustling street bursting with bars and clubs, definitely worth a visit one night if you want a livelier night out. There’s a golf course nearby and although that’s not our cup of tea, we spoke to plenty of people who come to the Algarve just to play golf! So if you’re looking for a resort that’s relaxing but with just enough if you want it without being in your face or over the top, then Praia d’Oura is just what you’re looking for.
