Hotel RIU Palace Santa Maria opened its doors in February 2021 on the island of Sal in Cape Verde. Sal is one of Cape Verde’s ten islands that are sprinkled off the west coast of Africa. The islands were originally discovered by the Portuguese, and there’s also a mixture of African and Brazilian influences which you’ll see in the island’s music, fashion and in the food.
Hotel RIU Palace Santa Maria is about 25 minutes away from the airport, so it won’t be long before you’re sipping all inclusive cocktails round the pool. The closest town to the hotel is Santa Maria, which is 2km away. Santa Maria is the island’s main resort and here you can find plenty of shops, restaurants and bars.
Back at the hotel, rooms here are super modern and have plenty of amenities to make your stay more comfortable. All rooms also come with an in-room drinks optic – meaning you’ll have your very own branded premium spirits on tap in your room. The drinks can vary but usually include brands such as Smirnoff vodka and Bacardi rum. Swim up rooms are also available if you want a special treat.
Keepin’ Active
If keeping busy on holiday is your thing, you’ll want to head to the beach for the heart of the action. Here, you’ll be able to hire kayaks or learn how to windsurf. In the hotel, meanwhile, there’s aqua aerobic classes in one of the pools. Just to let you know, the availability of the water sports facilities will depend on weather conditions.
The hotel entertainment programme features live performances of music and dancing every evening. There’s also a hotel-run kids’ club, RiuLand, for little ones which is on six times a week for ages 4 to 7 and 8 to 12.
From winter 2022, the all new Riu Get Together Party will happen once a week at nearby Riu Funana, with guests from the neighbouring Riu Cabo Verde invited, too. It’s a great way to grow your social circle on holiday or just to have a nosey in the other RIU hotels!
Wet and Wild
Hotel RIU Palace Santa Maria has six, yes six, pools that come in all shapes and sizes! There are five outdoor pools – two of them include a swim-up bar, while another hosts activities like aqua aerobics, and there’s a kids’ number. All of the pools are heated in the winter, too. Sunloungers, parasols and pool towels will also be available. In the spa area is where you’ll find the indoor pool.
Splash Water World is the hotel’s waterpark, and is a must-visit during your holiday. It’s open six days a week so there’s plenty of time to enjoy all the slides including the racing chutes and fast tunnels. Just to let you know, you have to be at least 1.20m/3.9ft tall to be admitted into the waterpark.
The beach is also a great place to soak up the sunshine. On the beach there are plenty of sun loungers and parasols available for free to hotel guests.
Fill Your Plates
Hotel RIU Palace Santa Maria has five tasty restaurants in the resort, four are off-the-menu places – choose from an Italian, fusion, Japanese or steakhouse restaurant. The fifth restaurant – a buffet number – was designed with an outdoor terrace. And drinks come courtesy of seven bars, including a sports bar, two swim-up numbers in the pool, and a quiet spot in the lobby.
All a la carte restaurants require a reservation for your visit and just to let you know, there’s a smart casual dress code for most of the restaurants.
At lunch times, if you’re looking for something more relaxed than the buffet, Pepe’s Food Grill is a great spot and you’ll find it just by the pool serving up lots of tasty dishes to help you refuel.
