E – Es Cana
Es Cana is a popular resort on Ibiza’s east coast, and although it’s relatively small, it’s bursting with personality! There’s tonnes of beautiful beaches to explore and if you’re the partying type, Ibiza Town isn’t too far away. But, let’s get to the good stuff…
Ask any native to the Balearic Islands, specifically Ibiza, they’ll tell you that no family gathering or evening around the dinner table with friends is complete without a delicious Greixonera. It may look like another traditional Spanish food, the tortilla, but this dessert is made with bread and is a filling and tasty way to end a meal. The recipe simply requires bread, sugar, eggs and milk, with a dash of lemon and cinnamon to top it off. A beautifully tasty Spanish sweet treat!
A – Algarve
The Algarve has been a much-loved holiday destination by Brits for many years, and it’s not hard to see why. The glorious temperatures and plenty of sandy spots make it the perfect place for a relaxing getaway on the beach, and it’s not too far from home either! But what sort of delicious sweet treats can you enjoy here?
The very popular Pastel de Nata or Custard Tarts are thin and crusty pastries with an egg and vanilla filling. They were originally created in Belém, a historical region of Portugal, back in 1837. The dish can be enjoyed warm or cold, and is often dusted with cinnamon powder, if it’s to your taste of course! Once they have been baked, a caramelised top forms adding the perfect crunch to the delicately creamy custard filling. Next flight to the Algarve please…we just have to try one!
S – Sharm El Sheikh
When exploring destinations like Sharm El Sheikh, one of the most exciting things can be trying new dishes that we don’t often see back home. With strong flavours, unique ingredient combinations and the North African flare, you can be sure you’re in for a treat. But besides amazing savoury dishes, what can those of us with a sweet tooth look forward to?
Umm Ali is one of the most famous and delicious Egyptian desserts, which dates back to the ruler Shagarat el-Dour. She invented the sweet treat to celebrate taking over from her husband, the Sultan of Egypt, as ruler, and translated, Umm Ali in Arabic means ‘Ali’s Mother’. When the Sultan passed away, his wife Shagarat el-Dour offered people a dessert made from Roqaq, which is Egyptian bread, soaked in milk with sugar and nuts. Since then, the dessert was named after her. Nowadays, Umm Ali is prepared using Egyptian flat thin bread, soaked in whole milk with sugar and nuts, then baked in the oven for a while.
T – Torremolinos
Torremolinos is nestled on the southern coast of Spain, west of Malaga. It’s a lovely town which has clean sandy beaches and plenty of history if you like to explore the local culture when you visit somewhere new. When visiting a beach destination, there’s one particular sweet treat that we all just can’t resist, and there’s a whole host of spots where you can grab it in Torremolinos.
That’s right, on holiday us Brits just LOVE an ice cream, especially after a day in the sunshine. Thanks to its seaside location, you’ll be spoilt for choice in Torremolinos when it comes to spots to grab a delicious frozen treat. There’s plenty of family run Heladerías where you can try some handmade ice creams and sorbets, and there’s also a Häagen-Dazs counter where you can get your hands on your favourite flavour which of course tastes better than from the freezer at home!
E – Elounda
Elounda Village is a picturesque town in east Crete. It was once a quaint fishing village and now it’s the perfect destination to visit if you’re not looking for a lively getaway, but equally don’t want to visit somewhere too secluded. It’s a great place to kick back and relax on a beach, or really immerse yourself in the beautiful Greek culture. And what better way to do that than by sampling all the delicious and authentic treats the town has to offer.
Kalitsounia are small cheese or herb snacks associated with the Greek island of Crete. They can be described as a treat, with different filling and serving variations. They can be eaten as sweet or savoury snacks, and of course, we’re interested in the sweet ones! Kalitsounia are traditionally made with the fresh soft variety of myzithra cheese, but if you can’t find it, try them with some Italian mascarpone or ricotta. Serve as a delicious dessert with a drizzle of warm honey and a sprinkle of powdered cinnamon.
R – Runaway Bay
Runaway Bay is a town on Jamaica’s north coast that’s known for its coral reef and for beaches like Cardiff Hall Beach and Fisherman’s Beach, with stunning clear water that’s perfect for snorkelling. From Runaway Bay, you can get to one of the island’s most popular attractions in half an hour so it’s a great spot to settle down in after a long day of sightseeing. You’ll need to make sure you fuel up for your exploring too, and of course, Jamaican food is amongst some of the tastiest you can get! But when it comes to sweet snacks, you’ll be in for a real treat.
Tamarind Balls are a favourite amongst Jamaican sweets. Using the sticky flesh of tamarind, these sweet and sour treats are one of the traditional Jamaican dessert recipes loved by so many. Tamarind balls are made by mixing the flesh of the tamarind fruit with a little bit of water, then rolling the mixture into balls and covering them with brown sugar. Some people even like to add a kick to their tamarind balls by adding hot chilli pepper powder to the otherwise sweet and sour treat.
