Winter Sports, Climbing and NYE Parties at La Plagne

The French ski resort has a host of varied events in store over the next few months.

Anyone considering one of Europe’s ski resorts for their winter holidays may wish to look at the many events taking place in La Plagne in France’s Rhône-Alpes over its 2011-12 season.

As well as the excellent winter sports facilities, the resort will be offering visitors a chance to participate in its 50th anniversary celebrations, the precise date of which falls on 21 December. The festivities will include live shows, an exhibition examining the history of skiing as a pastime and other special events yet to be announced.

At the end of this month, the village of Plagne-Bellecote will become a massive dancefloor for a huge New Year’s Eve fireworks display, party and music concert, giving revellers the chance to strut their stuff after a day on the piste.

In the new year itself, La Plagne will be hosting the exciting Ice Climbing World Cup, from 3-4 February. In this tournament, ice climbers will compete to scale the 22-metre permanent ice tower in Champagny en Vanoise.

Between 9 April and 15 April, the fifth Urban Plagne Festival will be bringing the most cutting edge and entertaining films to the resort, with mountains and winter sports the theme. As well as the scheduled cinematic delights, organisers have challenged professional skiers and snowboarders to come up with their own short film to demonstrate their coolest freestyle tricks and manoeuvres – and for fans of hip-hop and skate culture there will be demonstrations and exhibitions of rap, DJing and graffiti art.
